Working fire in Chicago, 5-18-18
On Friday, May 18th, 2018, a fire broke out in the 6600 block of N. Olmsted. The response was delayed due to an alley garage on the same block, which caused a significant holdup in the arrival of the RIT truck company. The fire had already taken hold in hidden spaces and knee walls, requiring extensive truck work to bring under control. Later in the incident, some firefighters found themselves in a dangerous position on the roof when conditions changed quickly, cutting off access to the aerial ladder. Fortunately, the fire was knocked down rapidly by interior handlines, preventing a more serious situation.
Despite challenging conditions—including a narrow street, low-hanging tree branches, and power lines—Truck 9 managed to set up its aerial safely. One of the last photos captured shows the relief of the rescued victims. All images from the scene are available here.
